Spearheading a major presence as the Senior Fashion Editor at Australian ELLE and maintaining a loyal client base with major corporate clients such as Witchery for close to a decade, Sara Smith is an eclectic purist who describes her work as “very raw”.
Growing up in rural Scotland with a bedroom plastered with monochrome images from The Face and i-D magazine. Smith names Kate Moss, Corrine Day and David Sims as a pivotal early influence. To this day she wears black, white and grey. Smith says she still retains a preference to the androgyny and grit of early 90s British design but takes pleasure in working across a broad brief and the suspense of the unexpected. Hers is not a flamboyant approach, adopting instead a concentrated background role in order to pay intense attention to nuance and detail:
“Clothes are my materials. I’m passionate about the image. I like being shown a rack of clothes and having to bring them to life” it’s a simple promise that transforms every shoot, every time.
